The merchant and painter Simon van Brakel (1816-1884) was a member of the artistsociety Pictura and belonged to the School of Dordrecht, dominated by the painter J.C. Schotel. As a painter Simon was taught by his father Gerrit van Brakel, also a merchant as well as a painter of seascapes and member of Pictura as well. Oil on panel, signed.

Simon van Brakel fue un pintor de origen holandés, nacido el 24 de diciembre de 1816 en Dordrecht, Países Bajos. Era conocido como comerciante y pintor. Los temas favoritos de su mano incluyen paisajes marinos, barcos y vistas al río. En 1869, la obra de van Brakels se exhibió en la Exposition générale des Beaux Arts. Van Brakel vivió en la ciudad de Dordrecht toda su vida y murió el 5 de febrero de 1884.
