Modest Huys fue un pintor impresionista y luminista flamenco. Trabajó en el negocio de pintura y decoración de su padre desde muy joven y en 1900 se matriculó en la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Amberes. A partir de 1905, participó en las exposiciones de Vie et Lumière, grupo luminista, principalmente pintando paisajes. Después de la Primera Guerra Mundial, pintó escenas de devastación en el frente. Su obra se expuso en el Salón de París. Durante este período, sus colores se volvieron más oscuros y los contrastes más duros, acercándose al Expresionismo. Murió en 1932 en Zulte, donde había construido su casa-estudio ideal, los Zonnehuys, en 1926.
