    In the Paris of the 1930s, Salvador Dalí (1904/1989) surrounded himself with a circle of friends working in the application of art to a number of varied disciplines, beyond the study of purely pictorial art. One of these, Jean-Michel Frank, an acclaimed furniture designer and decorator in Paris at that time, got on extremely well with Dalí, and together they developed a number of ideas. One example of this is the Bracelli lamp, a classic design in Jean-Michel’s manner of designing and working that Dalí adopted for his home in Portlligat. Among Dalí’s projects, which add to his CV as a designer, are the garden furniture for his home in Portlligat, the complete architecture of the Night Club (in the shape of a hedgehog) for the Hotel Presidente in Acapulco (1957) and a project for a bar in California in the 1940s. His creations were not limited to traditional furniture elements, but included taps, handles, knobs, prints and objects of indeterminate use. In 1933, Dalí even registered the patent for the design of a bench as an outdoor seat. In the 1990s, a team of experts led by Oscar Tusquets set out to bring to life the furniture that Dalí had sketched for Jean-Michel Frank, including the Leda chair and low table taken from the 1935 painting “Femme à latête rose” (1935). The sculptor Joaquim Camps was responsible for breathing life into them and BD Barcelona Design took charge of their worldwide exclusive production and marketing.

    Salvador Dalí nació Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dalí y Domenech, el 11 de mayo de 1904. El padre del reconocido artista español, quien era un abogado de clase media, tenía un estricto enfoque disciplinario en la crianza de los hijos. La madre de Dalí, por otro lado, fue un fuerte factor alentador en el desarrollo de su arte y su excéntrica personalidad. Salvador era un niño inteligente, pero experimentó muchos arrebatos de ira. Debido a los castigos que recibió su padre a causa de esto, la relación entre los dos se deterioró. Salvador fue enviado a la escuela de dibujo en el Colegio de Hermanos Maristas y el Instituto en Figueres, España, en 1916, aunque nunca tomó su educación completamente en serio.

    Cuando Salvador tenía 16 años murió su madre, dejando al adolescente devastado. En 1922 Dalí se matriculó en la Academia de San Fernando de Madrid, donde fue influenciado por la metafísica y el cubismo. Solo un año después, Dalí fue suspendido por iniciar un motín sobre la elección de una cátedra por parte de la academia. Regresó en 1926, pero fue expulsado definitivamente debido a su declaración de que ningún miembro de la facultad sería lo suficientemente competente para examinar su trabajo.     En 1930, Dalí se había convertido en una figura importante del movimiento surrealista y, a mediados de los años 30, su colorida personalidad también se hizo notoria. A partir de 1960 Dalí incluso dedicó su tiempo a la creación del Teatro-Museo Dalí, que se inauguró oficialmente en 1974 y alberga una amplia gama de obras de Dalí. En 1980 Dalí se retiró de la pintura debido a un trastorno motor. Esto lo llevó a la depresión que se hizo cumplir 4 años más tarde después de que sufriera quemaduras graves a causa de un incendio. Estaba confinado a una silla de ruedas. En 1989 Dalí murió de insuficiencia cardíaca.
