Keller was 'professor of sculpture' at the Glasgow School of Art in 1898.
Born in the Hague, the success of his father's novels enabled him to study in Amsterdam and Brussels under Professor Allebé and Charles Van de Stappen.
He travelled widely in Italy and he settled briefly in Paris where he worked for a waxworks and exhibited at the Salon in 1896. Two years later Keller moved to Glasgow, where he was a key exponent of the Glasgow Style. He was invited to became 'teacher of sculpture' at the Glasgow School of Art in 1898 . From 1900-1910 he was ‘professor of modelling’ at the same School.
Later he returned to Holland where he spent the latter part of his life.

Johan Keller fue un artista holandés nacido en La Haya, 1863, en la familia de un escritor. Cuando a sus padres les pidieron que lo sacaran de la escuela porque desperdiciaba sus estudios haciendo garabatos en clase. El éxito de las novelas de su padre fue la razón por la que Keller pudo estudiar arte en Ámsterdam y Bruselas, y viajar también a Italia y Francia. Las obras anteriores de Keller incluyen una estatua de piedra arenisca para el Museo Booijmans en Rotterdam. Aceptó un puesto de profesor en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Glasgow y se le encargó el plan de decoración de muchos edificios de arquitectos famosos. Keller vivió en los Países Bajos los últimos años de su vida y falleció en 1944.
