  In the foreground, we see a woman in a light blue coat and red skirt walking a path through a park-like area, where the bare trees and traces of snow or wet grass suggest a cold winter day. The atmosphere is melancholic, yet also enlivened by the warm glow of lights and colors radiating from the fairground tent. At the center of the painting is a large merry-go-round with a red-and-blue striped tent and illuminated horses turning. The rounded shapes and warm tones contrast sharply with the cool grays of the sky and the bare trees, giving the work an almost cinematic, dreamlike quality. On the right, slightly in the background, we recognize the Eiffel Tower, subtly rising from the Parisian sky. Beyond the fairground, other attractions appear to be present, and the shadows of visitors convey a sense of movement and life. Hordijk is known for his depictions of urban entertainment, circuses, and fairground scenes, in which he captures the light, rhythm, and atmosphere of the moment. This work fits in perfectly: it is a play of light, colour and emotion, in which the joy of the fair forms a poetic counterbalance to the grey, almost gloomy evening sky.
  
• Sobre el artista
  Gerardus Hordijk nació en 1899 en La Haya, Países Bajos. Fue conocido como artista gráfico, ilustrador y pintor. Hordijk estudió ingeniería en Delft, pero sigue asistiendo a clases en la Academia de Bellas Artes de La Haya. Se gradúa en ambos establecimientos. En 1927, Hordijk se traslada a París y se instala en el mismo complejo de estudios que Piet Mondriaan en ese momento; Rue du Départ. Aquí produce principalmente óleos, gouaches y acuarelas inspiradas en el ballet. Pero también desarrolla un estilo de trabajo personal incorporando mucho ocre, mientras que su obra posterior exhuma una serenidad más simple. A Hordijk también le gustaba pintar temas figurativos clásicos como bañistas en la Costa Azul, paisajes urbanos y bodegones de flores. En 1930, Hordijk se casa con su esposa estadounidense Margaret Mathews, que estaba de visita en Francia y estaba aprendiendo el idioma en ese momento. La pareja vivió en Ámsterdam durante un tiempo, antes de mudarse a Nueva York en 1940 y cambiar su apellido a Hordyk con fines de marketing. Al igual que Hordijk, Mondriaan también se mudó a Nueva York en 1940. Los dos se conocían regularmente y se escribían cartas. En 2006, el marchante de arte Marcel Gieling descubrió el legado casi completo de Hordijk en una villa vacía; contenía cientos de pinturas y acuarelas, junto a letras de Mondriaan. Después de que Hordyk se mudó a Amsterdam una vez más, su popularidad solo creció. El 15 de octubre de 1958, Hordyk falleció en la misma ciudad.
