Signed lower right - Sobre el artistaJacob Maris fue un pintor importante de la Escuela de La Haya. Más que cualquier otro artista, fue capaz de capturar los tonos grises plateados de un día neerlandés nublado y combinarlos con marrones oscuros, ocres y un solo toque de color. Pintó principalmente paisajes, paisajes urbanos y escenas de playa. Influenciado por la Escuela de Barbizon, pintó directamente de la naturaleza. Logró un gran éxito a nivel internacional y su trabajo se vendió en Escocia y Estados Unidos.
