  Broer Dobbelsteen, born Johannes Anthonius (Johan) van den Dobbelsteen (Mierlo, 1936 – 2019), studied at the Academy of Industrial Design in Eindhoven. In the first years after his studies, he worked as a designer, but from 1964 onwards he was active as a full-time artist.
  
  His work is characterized by primary colors and large planes, rough forms, and a playful approach to the subject. He was part of the expressionist movement, which largely shaped the character of the first half of the twentieth century. Experimentation, spontaneity, and freedom were central principles. The use of bright colors and simple forms is typical of Dobbelsteen’s work.
  
  He was partly inspired by the Cobra movement. His paintings are widely represented in institutions, art dealers, galleries, and private collections.

  Broer van den Dobbelsteen (1936-2019), más conocido como Broer Dobbelsteen, fue un artista neerlandés de Geldrop que se distinguió por un lenguaje visual vibrante y expresivo. Su obra se caracteriza por colores intensos, pinceladas espontáneas y un enfoque directo e intuitivo de la forma y la composición.

  Dobbelsteen trabajó movido por una fuerte motivación personal y desarrolló un estilo reconocible que equilibra la figuración y la abstracción. Sus pinturas y dibujos suelen representar figuras humanas, paisajes y escenas cotidianas, pero distorsionadas y simplificadas hasta su esencia. El enfoque no estaba en la representación realista, sino en la carga emocional y la energía del momento.

  A lo largo de su carrera, se mantuvo fiel a esta forma de trabajar libre y espontánea. Su obra irradia una sensación de espontaneidad y vitalidad, en la que el color y el movimiento desempeñan un papel central. Como artista, Dobbelsteen logró labrarse un lugar propio dentro del arte neerlandés de posguerra, con una obra a la vez accesible y personal.
