- Sobre la obra de arteThis exclusive and large work by Harrie Kuyten depicts a reclining nude woman with her eyes closed. The painting is signed “Harrie Kuijten” in the lower right corner and marked “Amsterdam.” As the work was created in Amsterdam, it was most likely painted between 1914 and 1921, the period during which Kuyten lived in the city and produced many nude studies. During these years, he developed an expressive style that combined elements of Impressionism with influences from the colorful French Fauvist movement.
The painting is in good condition, having been professionally restored and varnished in 2026. The frame is the original authentic frame. On the reverse of the stretcher, the inscriptions “Harrie Kuijten” and “Groet (N.H.)” can be found once again. The back of the frame also bears a note stating that the work was once exhibited at the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
Henricus Johannes (Harrie) Kuyten was born in Utrecht on December 19, 1883, and passed away in Schoorl on January 29, 1952. He was active as a graphic artist, painter, draftsman, lithographer, and woodcut artist. Kuyten studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and received the Royal Subsidy for three consecutive years. After traveling extensively throughout Europe, he settled in Amsterdam in 1914, where he painted not only cityscapes but also many nude figures. He later lived in Austria, Hungary, and Paris before eventually settling in Schoorl.
His oeuvre includes a wide variety of subjects, such as landscapes, harbor scenes, still lifes, beach and seascapes, animals, interiors, and self-portraits. Kuyten is associated with the Bergen School movement. He was also a member of several artists’ societies, including Arti et Amicitiae, De Onafhankelijken, the Hollandse Kunstenaarskring, and the KunstenaarsCentrumBergen. Today, his works can be found in private, corporate, and public collections, including the collection of Museum Kranenburgh and the Dutch National Art Collection.
