Sobre el artista
Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) nació en Sieggen en Alemania. Fue un importante pintor flamenco, dibujante y diplomático. Rubens viajó a Italia, donde se inspiró en el arte clásico y el trabajo de maestros italianos modernos como Caravaggio. Rubens pasó un tiempo en España en misión diplomática. En 1609, se convirtió en pintor de la corte del Archiduque Albrecht de Austria (en Bruselas). En este período aceptó importantes encargos de iglesias y edificios públicos. Trabajando en el estilo barroco flamenco, Rubens fue conocido por su alto grado de habilidad en todos los géneros: en representaciones de escenas bíblicas y mitológicas y eventos históricos, en retratos, paisajes, naturalezas muertas y representaciones de animales. Su versatilidad también es evidente en sus numerosos dibujos. Rubens mantuvo un gran estudio con muchos alumnos. Su casa y lugar de trabajo en Amberes todavía se pueden visitar hoy.
